A discussion meeting was held in Guwahati on citizenship and democracy at the pre-release of final draft list of NRC. According to the decision of the meeting , we are going to do similar public convention in lower Assam to take the discussion into more wider public.

After the final draft list of NRC is published, there are different types of opinions coming in the social fiel.  But in one case everyone agrees that many people are excluded due to the systematic error of the NRC process. There was an objection from our side from the beginning regarding exclusion of the D-voters in the NRC process. Many citizens are identified as D-Voters and are being deprive, sent to detention camps and most of them are the poor working people.

We believe that public opinion can be developed for a democratic solution to the issues of citizenshi,  firmly on the question of the rights of the workers-farmers and the development of Assam. Because this determination builds the unity in different tribes of peopl, when there is a conspiracy to make millions of people stateless, just then the promise to declare flood problem in Assam as the National Problem of Assam is being denied,  the dignity of the special state status of Assam is being lifted, true efforts to plunder Assam’s resources are being made, the conspiracy to evacuate the farmers in the name of the development for the benefit and favor of the capitalists, workers are being deprived of the minimum wage and the state is becoming a very active to compress the ability  of the people to protest.

So, we think, citizenship, democracy and development must be seen together and we have organised a mass-convension on the following subjects to discuss this.

1. Arrangements for the evaluation of documents of the people excluded from the final draft list of NRC without any sort of harassment. To avoid any such rules that propagates linguistic-communal divisio.
2. Many real citizens identified by Tribunal process as D-Voters are being harassed. To solve this D-Voter issue and incorporate their names in NRC.
3. Abolish the inhuman detention camps.
4. Reinstate the special state status of Assam.
5. To declare Assam’s flood as a National Problem.
6. Revocation of the conspiracy to evict the farmers on the two sides of the national highway and give up the land to the capitalists and to destroy the environment.
7. Repeal the increased land tax and arrangement for irrigation in the land.
8. To bring all the workers including NREGA under the minimum wage law and pay Rs. 350 daily.
9. Free education-health opportunities.
